Elevating Civic Infrastructure in the Heart of Alabama
The new Dothan City Hall stands as a landmark model for sustainable, community-oriented civic architecture in the Southeastern United States. Designed by RDG Planning and Design, the facility was conceived to demonstrate how modern mass timber can transform public municipal infrastructure. Utilizing Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) floor and roof systems supported by an exposed glulam framing system, the building offers a warm, transparent environment that prioritizes occupant wellness, structural efficiency, and low-carbon design for the City of Dothan.
Local Sourcing Meets End-to-End Execution
The project exemplifies a fully regional, hyper-local timber supply chain. The Southern Pine CLT and glulam components were harvested from forests across the Southeast and manufactured just down the street at SmartLam’s East Hub in Dothan. Serving as the comprehensive mass timber partner, SmartLam integrated early with the design team to provide upfront Design-Assist services, Specialty Engineering, and Connection Detailing, ensuring the exposed timber superstructure was optimized for both aesthetics and rapid field assembly.
Project Highlights
Technical Execution
With structural mass timber installation now complete, Dothan City Hall highlights the speed and accuracy made possible by early Design-Assist collaboration. SmartLam refined connection details and member layups to interface smoothly with surrounding trades and structural systems. By managing the project lifecycle from initial engineering through local fabrication and field erection, SmartLam delivered a high-performance, low-carbon civic hub built to serve the Dothan community for decades to come.
