Sustainability and Innovation in Every Bite

The McDonald’s Chicago Flagship Store is a landmark project that exemplifies how sustainability and innovative design can redefine modern retail spaces. Located in Chicago, Illinois, this store is a testament to the power of mass timber construction in creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that aligns seamlessly with McDonald’s contemporary branding and environmental goals.

This flagship store, completed in 2019, represents a bold step in commercial architecture. By featuring heavy timber and a Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) roof, it emphasizes eco-friendly practices while serving as a functional and visually striking retail environment for a global brand.

Project Overview & Design Philosophy

Spanning 19,065 square feet, this one-story structure redefines commercial architecture through its groundbreaking use of mass timber. The design prominently incorporates Glue-Laminated Timber (GLT) and Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) to create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. The visible mass timber elements contribute significantly to the store’s warm and inviting ambiance, offering a natural respite and a departure from traditional retail designs. Its Type V-A construction further demonstrates how mass timber can effectively meet rigorous fire and safety codes while delivering exceptional architectural beauty.

Sustainability & Innovation

Sustainability was a core driver in the design and construction of the McDonald’s Chicago Flagship Store. The extensive use of mass timber materials, including CLT and Glulam supplied by SmartLam North America, contributed significantly to a lower carbon footprint for the project. This choice of responsibly sourced timber helped McDonald’s achieve its environmental objectives and underscored their commitment to green building practices. Beyond structural integrity, the mass timber elements provide a unique, nature-inspired aesthetic that enhances the store’s overall sustainability narrative, creating an environment that is both environmentally conscious and appealing to customers.

A Groundbreaking Use of Mass Timber in Retail

The McDonald’s Chicago Flagship Store stands out as a groundbreaking example of mass timber’s application in commercial retail. The mass timber coffer ceiling—constructed out of Glulam post and beams, and 3-ply CLT panels supplied by SmartLam—is a key design feature. This unifying element begins on the exterior and continues inwards, creating a seamless visual flow. Not only does this innovative structure provide the necessary support to span vast ceiling heights, but it also lends a sense of warmth and natural elegance to the space, redefining the traditional fast-food experience. The precision craftsmanship from SmartLam ensured seamless integration of these complex mass timber elements into the overall design.
