The Campus “Front Door” with Mass Timber Innovation
As part of Micron’s expansion of its Manassas, Virginia plant, this project redefines the campus entrance, serving as its “front door.” This new facility provides essential amenities including a security checkpoint, executive meeting spaces, a dining hall, fitness center, and a vital respite area for this 24/7 manufacturing facility. The design seamlessly integrates functionality with a profound focus on employee well-being, leveraging mass timber to create a welcoming, high-performance, and aesthetically pleasing environment that sets a new standard for industrial campus support buildings.
Sustainability and Wellness in Focus
Sustainability is an important focus for this project, which is actively pursuing both LEED and WELL certifications at the Gold Level. The integration of mass timber plays a key role in achieving these ambitious environmental and wellness targets. By utilizing glulam post and beams and 3-ply CLT panels, the building contributes to a reduced carbon footprint, enhances interior warmth, and provides a calming atmosphere for occupants. The design prioritizes natural materials and thoughtful spatial arrangements to support the overall well-being of the employees.
Architectural Integration of Mass Timber
A standout architectural feature of the Micron Manassas facility is its impressive mass timber coffer ceiling. Constructed out of glulam post and beams and 3-ply CLT panels, this element is expressed as a unifying design feature that begins on the exterior and gracefully continues inwards, creating a seamless visual flow and a striking first impression. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this timber structure provides the necessary support to span the vast 27 ft tall ceilings in the dining and townhall space. It also lends inherent warmth and a sense of natural respite, offering a welcome contrast and comfort from the more industrial manufacturing spaces inhabited by employees during their shifts, truly enhancing the user experience.
