Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Bus Terminal

Vaughan Metropolitan Centre Bus Terminal

The Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) Bus Terminal is a unique structure that blends concrete, steel, and mass timber. The building is shaped like a horseshoe in its plan, featuring a central enclosed pavilion and two exterior wings that wrap around the main bus loop.

Integrated Design

This project highlights a modern approach to integrated design, prioritizing both a striking aesthetic and the longevity of the materials used. The structure features architecturally exposed elements throughout, showcasing the beauty of the integrated materials. Careful attention was paid to the exterior detailing at the bus platforms to protect the wood components from direct sun exposure and wind-driven rain. This proactive consideration for the durability of the mass timber ensures the building’s lasting performance and aesthetic appeal.

Architectural Integration of Mass Timber

A key architectural feature of the VMC Bus Terminal is the use of mass timber in a cantilevered design at the front of the pavilion. To achieve a clean aesthetic, a moment connection with internal epoxied steel plates was used where the glulam beams extend past their supports. This detailing not only serves a structural purpose but also contributes to the modern and integrated look of the building. The combination of different materials creates a visually dynamic and high-performance structure.

Project Highlights
