Largest Mass Timber Sports Facility in the U.S.

The Victory Capital Performance Center for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs is a landmark project that unequivocally showcases the immense potential of mass timber in athletic facility construction. This impressive 134,000-square-foot training facility not only sets records in U.S. professional sports as the largest mass timber-constructed training facility but also stands as the largest mass timber construction project completed in Texas.

Designed by ZGF Architects and engineered by Arup, the building represents a significant advancement in sustainable and innovative construction within the sports industry. SmartLam North America was proud to partner on this project, contributing to a facility that truly pushes the boundaries of performance and design.

Project Overview & Design Philosophy

This state-of-the-art facility is meticulously dedicated to advancing human performance, serving as a new hub with cutting-edge amenities strategically located in one of Northwest San Antonio’s fastest-growing areas. It features extensive, tailored facilities for elite athletes, including multiple practice courts, advanced environmental training rooms, therapy pools, a sensory deprivation tank, a dedicated team dining room, and a performance kitchen. The expansive use of mass timber throughout the structure contributes significantly to a modern, high-performance environment, simultaneously highlighting the material’s inherent aesthetic appeal and remarkable structural capabilities, creating an inspiring space for athletic excellence.

Sustainability & Innovation

The Victory Capital Performance Center, with its substantial mass timber construction, inherently embodies principles of sustainability. The choice of mass timber, including Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels and exceptionally large Glulam beams (130 ft long), contributes to a reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional construction methods. SmartLam North America’s role in supplying these high-quality CLT panels was crucial, forming essential structural elements within the building’s innovative design. This project demonstrates how engineered wood can deliver not only architectural beauty and long-span capabilities but also align with environmental responsibility, setting a new standard for sustainable construction in professional sports.

A Landmark in Sports Facility Design

The Victory Capital Performance Center stands as a monumental achievement, redefining what is possible in sports training facility design and construction. As the largest mass timber-constructed training facility in U.S. professional sports and the largest mass timber project completed in Texas, it serves as a powerful demonstration of mass timber’s scalability and versatility. The prominent use of exposed mass timber creates an inspiring, high-performance environment, reflecting a commitment to innovation that benefits both the athletes and the broader industry by setting a precedent for future sustainable athletic complexes.
