The Future of Better
Walmart’s new home office is built on a 350-acre campus of native greenery in Bentonville, Arkansas, and redefines the company’s work environment with a profound commitment to wellness and sustainability. This extensive campus, scheduled for a phased opening, spans more than 2.5 million square feet of mass timber construction across 11 buildings. The new facilities will include a fitness center, dining areas, daycare, and a visitor center. The project leverages mass timber to create a warm, inviting, and high-performance environment that sets a new standard for modern corporate campuses.
A Vision for Sustainability and Wellness
The Walmart Home Office project is a testament to the power of mass timber to create beautiful, sustainable spaces. The buildings feature exposed wood in their open floor plans, bringing a sense of warmth and natural respite to the workspaces. The design prioritizes employee well-being by maximizing natural light and integrating with the surrounding landscape through paths and bike trails. As the first certified manufacturer of cross-laminated timber (CLT) in the United States, SmartLam was able to provide a full kit of parts from its dual facilities. This dual capacity allows the project to move forward with a high volume of quality mass timber, ensuring schedule certainty and reliable, on-time delivery.
SmartLam’s Role: Unmatched Production & Coast-to-Coast Reach
With facilities in Columbia Falls, Montana, and Dothan, Alabama, SmartLam was a key partner in this large-scale project, providing a significant portion of the CLT and glulam materials. This dual-facility model provided redundancy in production, which was essential for a project of this scale and complexity. SmartLam’s ability to source a variety of wood species from different regions of the country, including Douglas Fir, Spruce-Pine-Fir, and Southern Pine, also enabled a level of customization and flexibility for the project’s specific design and sustainability goals.
